‘Heritage’ is what we inherit from the past, live within the present and then pass on to our children or future generation. Our unique source of life and inspiration is our cultural and natural heritage. When we speak of ‘World Heritage’, it indicates places and sites that we inherited from the past and pass on to the future generation of the entire world. 

The ‘Shat Gambuj Mosque’ in Bagerhat is such a heritage. It became a UNESCOWorld Heritage Site in 1985.

বাগেরহাটের ‘ষাট গম্বুজ মসজিদ’ এমনই একটি ঐতিহ্য । ১৯৮৫ সালে এটি একটি  ইউনেস্কোর ওয়ার্ল্ড হেরিটেজ সাইটে পরিণত হয়েছিল। 

Originally, the historic Mosque City was known as ‘ Khalifatabad’. It is situated at the outskirts of Bagerhat town--- not very far from the dense mangrove forest of the Sundarbans. Khalifatabad was a Muslim colony. It was founded by the Turkish general, a saint warrior Ulugh Khan Jahan in the 15th century. The infrastructure of the city reveals significant technical skills in many mosques as well as early Islamic monuments. Baked bricks were used for the construction of the buildings. The planning of the city was dominated by the tradition of Islamic architecture and the decorations were a combination of Mughal and Turkish architecture. 

মূলত, ঐতিহাসিক মসজিদ শহরটি ‘খলিফতাবাদ’ নামে পরিচিত ছিল। এটি বাগেরহাট শহরের উপকণ্ঠে অবস্থিত --- সুন্দরবনের ঘন ম্যানগ্রোভ বন থেকে খুব দূরে নয়। খলিফতাবাদ ছিল একটি মুসলিম উপনিবেশ। এটি ১৫ তম শতাব্দীতে তুরস্কের জেনারেল, একজন সাধু/সন্ত যোদ্ধা উলুগ খান জাহান প্রতিষ্ঠা করেছিলেন। শহরের অবকাঠামো অনেক মসজিদ এবং প্রাথমিক ইসলামিক স্মৃতিস্তম্ভগুলিতে উল্লেখযোগ্য প্রযুক্তিগত/ কারিগরি  দক্ষতা প্রকাশ করে। বেকড/ পোড়ামাটির ইটগুলি ভবনগুলি নির্মাণের জন্য ব্যবহৃত হত। শহরটির পরিকল্পনাটি ইসলামী স্থাপত্যের ঐতিহ্যের দ্বারা প্রাধান্য/ আধিপত্য  পেয়েছিল এবং সজ্জাগুলি ছিল মোগল এবং তুর্কি স্থাপত্যের সংমিশ্রণ।  

Khan Jahan built a network of roads, bridges, public buildings and reservoirs ( রেজভ্ আরস)  to make the city habitable. There were about 360 mosques in the city. Among them the most remarkable is the multi-domed Shat Gombuj Mosque. The mosque is unique in the sense that it has 60 pillars that support the roof, with 77 low height domes. The 4 towers at 4 corners have smaller domes at the top as well. The vast prayer hall has 11 arched doorways on the east and 7 each on the north and south for light and ventilation. It has 7 aisles running along the length of the mosque and 11 deep curves between the slender stone columns. These columns support the curving arches created by the domes. The thickness of the arches is 6 feet and has slightly narrowing hollow and round wall. 

খান জাহান শহরকে বাসযোগ্য করে তোলার জন্য রাস্তা, সেতু, পাবলিক ভবন এবং জলাধারগুলির একটি নেটওয়ার্ক (অন্তরজাল/ পরস্পর সংযুক্তটা)  তৈরি করেছিলেন। শহরে প্রায় 360 টি মসজিদ ছিল । তাদের মধ্যে সবচেয়ে উল্লেখযোগ্য হ'ল বহু গম্বুজ বিশিষ্ট ষাট  গম্বুজ মসজিদ। মসজিদটি এই অর্থে অনন্য যে এটিতে ৬০ টি স্তম্ভ রয়েছে যা ৭৭ টি উচ্চ দৈর্ঘ্যের গম্বুজ সহ ছাদকে সমর্থন করে / ধরে রাখে । ৪ টি কোণে ৪ টি  টাওয়ার/মিনার/ দুর্গ / কেল্লা  এর শীর্ষে ছোট ছোট গম্বুজও রয়েছে। বিশাল আকারের এই  প্রার্থনা হলের পূর্বদিকে ১১  টি খিলানযুক্ত/ ধনুকাকৃতি দরজা এবং উত্তর ও দক্ষিণে প্রতিটি হালকা এবং বায়ুচলাচলের জন্য ৭ টি খিলানযুক্ত দরজা রয়েছে।  এটি মসজিদটির দৈর্ঘ্য ধরে ৭ টি আসনশ্রেণীর মধ্যবর্তী পথ / করিডোর এবং পাতলা পাথরের কলাম/স্তম্ভ/খামগুলির মধ্যে ১১ গভীর বক্ররেখা রয়েছে। এই কলামগুলি গম্বুজ দ্বারা নির্মিত বাঁকানো খিলানকে সমর্থন করে। খিলানগুলির দৈর্ঘ্য ৬ ফুট দূরত্ব বিশিষ্ট  এবং ফাঁকা এবং বৃত্তাকার প্রাচীরটি কিছুটা সংকীর্ণ হয়।

The west wall in the interior has 11 ‘mihrabs’ (niche in mosque pointing towards Makkah). These mihrabs are decorated with stonework and terracotta. The floor of the mosque is made of brick. Besides being used as a prayer hall, Khan Jahan used the mosque as his court too. Today, it is one of the greatest tourist attractions and one of the best architectural beauties of Bangladesh. 

অভ্যন্তরের পশ্চিম প্রাচীরটিতে ১১ টি ‘মিহরাব’ রয়েছে (মসজিদে মক্কার দিকে ইঙ্গিত করছে)। এই মিহরাবগুলি পাথরের কাজ এবং পোড়ামাটির সাথে সজ্জিত। মসজিদের মেঝেটি ইট দিয়ে তৈরি। প্রার্থনা শালা/ কক্ষ /হল হিসাবে ব্যবহারের পাশাপাশি খান জাহান মসজিদটিকে তাঁর আদালত হিসাবেও ব্যবহার করেছিলেন। আজ, এটি অন্যতম সেরা পর্যটন আকর্ষণ এবং বাংলাদেশের অন্যতম সেরা স্থাপত্যকীর্তি।

The Star Mosque is located at Abul Khairat Road in Dhaka. The mosque is a symbol of Mughal architecture both in technical skill and design. There are mainly 5 major domes on top of the mosque. The exterior of the mosque is decorated with different sizes of stars both on domes and outer walls. This decoration was mainly done with chinaware and white cement. And the interior of the mosques was created and decorated with floral tiles and the floor work was on the mosaic. This piece of monumental beauty was built by the patronization of Mirza Ghulam Pir- a respectable Zamindar in Dhaka during the early 18th century.
