You have learnt about different aspects of Sheikh Kamal in Lesson 1. Here read a tribute to Sheikh Kamal by one of his university friends. Dr Fakrul Alam, a Professor of English at the University of Dhaka, recalls his memories with Sheikh Kamal during his university days. When I first met Sheikh Kamal at the end of 1969, he was already known everywhere in the country as the eldest son of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, the undisputed leader of Bengalis, the man we love to think of as Friend of Bengal. I, on the other hand, was the son of middle-class parents and not exceptional in any sense. And yet when I was introduced to him in front of the entry to Kala Bhaban or the Arts Building of the University of Dhaka by a mutual friend, he greeted me with the friendliest of smiles and a warm handshake. He made me feel instantly that I would be his friend!
১৯৬৯ সালের শেষের দিকে যখন শেখ কামালের সাথে আমার প্রথম দেখা হয়, তখন তিনি বাঙালির অবিসংবাদিত নেতা বঙ্গবন্ধু শেখ মুজিবুর রহমান, যাকে আমরা বাংলার বন্ধু/ বঙ্গবন্ধু ভাবতে ভালোবাসি, তাঁর জ্যেষ্ঠ পুত্র হিসেবে ইতিমধ্যেই দেশের সর্বত্র পরিচিত ছিলেন ।অন্যদিকে, আমি মধ্যবিত্ত বাবা-মায়ের ছেলে ছিলাম এবং কোনো অর্থেই ব্যতিক্রমী/ বিশেষ ছিলাম না। তারপরও যখন ঢাকা বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়ের কলা ভবনে বা কলা ভবনে ঢোকার সামনে তার সাথে আমার পরিচয় হয় একজন পারস্পরিক বন্ধুর দ্বারা, তিনি আমাকে বন্ধুত্বপূর্ণ হাসি এবং উষ্ণ হ্যান্ডশেক/ করমর্দন দিয়ে অভ্যর্থনা জানান। তিনি আমাকে তাৎক্ষণিকভাবে/সাথে সাথে অনুভব করিয়েছিলেন যে আমি তার বন্ধু হব!
He was hugely popular in his own right by then. I already knew a lot about him from my Dhanmondi friends. For example, I knew that he was quite good at basketball and cricket, actively interested in music, always lively and full of good spirits.These qualities never deserted him. He was also known to be a tireless organizer - in student politics, of course, but also in the sports and cultural arenas. Although we never met regularly after 1971, he continued to be warm and friendly, whenever we met, inside or outside the university.
ততদিনে তিনি তার নিজ গুণেই ব্যাপক জনপ্রিয়তা লাভ করেন। আমার ধানমন্ডির বন্ধুদের কাছ থেকে তাঁর সম্পর্কে আগে থেকেই আমি অনেক কিছু জানতাম। উদাহরণস্বরূপ, আমি জানতাম যে তিনি বাস্কেটবল এবং ক্রিকেটে বেশ দক্ষ, সঙ্গীতে সক্রিয়ভাবে আগ্রহী, সর্বদা প্রাণবন্ত এবং ভালো গুণাবলীসম্পন্ন। তিনি কখনও এই গুণাবলী হতে বিচ্যুত হননি। ছাত্র রাজনীতিতে তো অবশ্যই, ক্রীড়া এবং সাংস্কৃতিক অঙ্গনেও তিনি একজন অক্লান্ত সংগঠক হিসেবে পরিচিত ছিলেন। যদিও ১৯৭১ সালের পর কখনই আমাদের নিয়মিত দেখা হয়নি, বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়ের ভেতরে বা বাইরে যখনই আমাদের দেখা হত, তিনি ছিলেন আন্তরিক এবং বন্ধুসুলভ।
Even now I remember vividly a number of occasions when I met him up close. One day, for example, a mutual friend invited a few of us to go to a place 30 miles or so outside Dhaka for a day out. This was also the site of a charitable foundation, a fully-funded school and a medical clinic for the people of the region. In addition, it had a pond and a playing field. On our way to the place and back, everywhere in it and all day long, Kamal was the life of our group.

I remember him singing spontaneously every now and then, joking and bursting into laughter often, playing cricket with us full-spiritedly, and showing keen interest in the activities of the foundation.I was reinforced in the belief I had at the end of our first meeting — he had the gift of friendship and I was one of his friends. And I could see by the end of the trip that he was good at everything - playing cricket, cracking jokes, music, making friends and having a good time!
আমার মনে আছে তিনি মাঝে মাঝে স্বতঃস্ফূর্তভাবে গান গাইতেন, কৌতুক করতেন এবং প্রায়ই হাসিতে ফেটে পড়তেন, আমাদের সাথে পূর্ণ-প্রাণে ক্রিকেট খেলতেন এবং ফাউন্ডেশনের/সংস্থার কার্যক্রমে গভীর আগ্রহ দেখিয়েছিলেন। আমাদের প্রথম সাক্ষাতের শেষে আমার তাঁর সম্পর্কে যে বিশ্বাস ছিল তা আরও দৃঢ় হয়েছিল — তার কাছে বন্ধুত্ব করার মত গুণাবলি ছিল এবং আমি তার বন্ধুদের একজন ছিলাম। এবং আমি যাত্রা/সফর শেষে দেখতে পাচ্ছিলাম যে সে সবকিছুতেই ভালো/দক্ষ ছিল - ক্রিকেট খেলা, কৌতুক করা, গান করা, বন্ধুত্ব করা এবং ভালো সময় কাটানো!
Kamal, I found out in the next few years, made friends instinctively. But it was also clear he cultivated friends. And so whenever he met, he would seem to go out of his way to greet you before you could greet him. He had a trademark smile, warm and welcoming.Soon, I found out that whenever we were in groups, whether in the Arts building or outside, he would become the life of any group, the center of attention, inevitably and naturally. And yet, when he talked to you, he made you feel that you were important, and worth his company.
আমি পরের কয়েক বছরে জানতে পেরেছিলাম যে কামাল সহজাতভাবে বন্ধুত্ব করতেন। তবে এটাও স্পষ্ট যে তিনি বন্ধুদের সম্মান/কদর করতেন। এবং তাই যখনই তিনি কারো সাথে দেখা করতেন, তাঁকে অভিবাদন জানানোর আগে তিনি তাঁর ঐ বন্ধু/ব্যক্তিকে অভিবাদন জানাতে পথে এগিয়ে যেতেন। তাঁর উষ্ণতা এবং আন্তরিকতায় পূর্ণ একটি বিশেষ/অনন্য হাসি ছিল। শীঘ্রই, আমি জানতে পারলাম যে, যখনই আমরা একসাথে থাকতাম, তা কলা ভবনেই হোক বা বাইরেই হোক, তিনি অনিবার্যভাবে এবং স্বাভাবিকভাবেই যে কোনও দলের প্রাণ ও মনোযোগের কেন্দ্রবিন্দু হয়ে উঠতেন। এবং তারপরেও, যখন তিনি কারো সাথে কথা বলতেন, তিনি তাঁকে অনুভব করাতেন যে তিনি তাঁর ( কামালের) কাছে গুরুত্বপূর্ণ এবং সহচর হওয়ার মত যোগ্য।
In late February 1969 Bangabandhu was released from jail and a month later Ayub Khan was replaced by Yahya Khan, another dictator, but one who was seemingly planning to lay the path down for democracy. This Khan pledged to hold genuine elections to the national as well as the provincial assemblies on the basis of universal suffrage; election fever gripped the country.
১৯৬৯ সালের ফেব্রুয়ারির শেষের দিকে বঙ্গবন্ধু জেল থেকে মুক্তি পান এবং এক মাস পরে আইয়ুব খানের স্থলাভিষিক্ত হন ইয়াহিয়া খান, আরেক স্বৈরশাসক, কিন্তু যিনি আপাতদৃষ্টিতে গণতন্ত্রের জন্য পথ তৈরি করার পরিকল্পনা করেছিলেন।এই খান সর্বজনীন ভোটাধিকারের ভিত্তিতে জাতীয় ও প্রাদেশিক পরিষদের প্রকৃত নির্বাচন অনুষ্ঠানের অঙ্গীকার করেছিলেন; সারাদেশে নির্বাচনী জ্বরের হাওয়া বইছিল/জোয়ারে ভাসছিল।
One day, Kamal invited me and a few of our friends to accompany him to Savar, where Bangabandhu was scheduled to speak in a couple of public meetings. We agreed readily. Once again, he regaled us on the way and back with his lively presence, chatting, joking and singing.We also had the opportunity to hear Bangabandhu speak on this occasion. With his golden voice, eloquence, gift for rhetoric and making complex things clear with vivid images and passionate arguments, Bangabandhu stirred us all. It was another day with Kamal that I would treasure.

One other day that I will treasure forever was sometime in 1970, when the Bengalees were gearing up for the National Assembly elections. Kamal had taken me and a few other friends to his Road no. 32 house for chatting, or what we in Bangla call adda, when Kamal suddenly had the idea of introducing us to his father. He was in another part of the house with other people, probably discussing election strategy, but he had time to greet us. I remember him waving affectionately, warmth for Kamal's friends written all over his smiling face.

After the war of independence was over, I continued to meet Kamal in the university. But on his return from the army he became busier and busier in politics, while I took to studying seriously and frequenting the library of the University of Dhaka regularly all day long and into early evenings.Nevertheless, even in brief exchanges Kamal, now the son of the Prime Minister of Bangladesh, made me feel that I was close to him, for he would not only exchange pleasantries but would also ask about me caringly and in the friendliest of manner.

Friendliness came naturally to Sheikh Kamal and more often than not, he would greet you with a smile before you could do so.There are two other occasions when I met Sheikh Kamal at this time. In the first, I was among the group of students who had secured the top positions in their Honors class and met Professor Abdul Matin Choudhury, our Vice-Chancellor in his office. The meeting was organized at Kamal's initiative.

The idea was that we would find the encounter inspirational and our Vice-Chancellor would get to meet a cross-section of the top performing students of a particular year to hear from them how the university could augment its academic facilities for future students.The second occasion was in late July 1975 when I was leaving the Arts Building to go to TSC for lunch. As I was about to leave, I saw Kamal coming down from his car to attend classes. As always, he greeted me with his characteristic warm smile and wanted to know where I was heading to.

When he found out, he insisted that he dropped me off at TSC, since he still had some minutes before his class. That was typical of Kamal. He was the son of Bangabandhu, the Prime Minister of Bangladesh, and he still had time to spare for a friend!That was the last time I would see Kamal, for two weeks later he was murdered, along with Bangabandhu and so many other family members. Among the dead was Kamal's wife Sultana, another batch mate, an outstanding athlete and a very attractive person in every way.
যখন তিনি জানতে পারলেন, তিনি জোর দিয়ে বললেন যে তিনি আমাকে টিএসসিতে নামিয়ে দিবেন, যেহেতু তাঁর ক্লাসের শুরু হতে আরও কিছু মিনিট বাকি আছে। এটাই ছিল কামালের স্বাভাবিক আচরণ/বৈশিষ্ট্য। তিনি ছিলেন বাংলাদেশের প্রধানমন্ত্রী বঙ্গবন্ধুর পুত্র এবং তা সত্ত্বেও তাঁর কাছে বন্ধুর জন্য কাটানোর মতো সময় ছিল!এটাই ছিল কামালের সাথে শেষ দেখা, দুই সপ্তাহ পর বঙ্গবন্ধুসহ পরিবারের আরও অনেক সদস্যের সাথে তাকেও খুন করা হয়। নিহতদের মধ্যে ছিলেন কামালের স্ত্রী সুলতানা, যিনি ছিলেন আমাদেরই ব্যাচের আরেক সাথী, একজন অসামান্য ক্রীড়াবিদ এবং সব দিক দিয়েই একজন অত্যন্ত আকর্ষণীয় ব্যক্তি।
All of us were stunned by the events of August 15, 1975. The renegade murderous soldiers had left the nation drift for the immediate future and we had lost the father of our nation. Affectionate, lively and always smiling Kamal would no more greet us, batch mates and make us feel blessed in having him as a friend!
১৯৭৫ সালের ১৫ই আগস্টের ঘটনায় আমরা সবাই স্তম্ভিত হয়ে গিয়েছিলাম। বিদ্রোহী ঘাতক সৈন্যরা জাতিকে অদূর ভবিষ্যতের জন্য স্থিমিত/ নিশ্চল করে দিয়েছিল এবং আমরা আমাদের জাতির পিতাকে হারিয়েছিলাম। স্নেহময়, প্রাণবন্ত এবং সর্বদা হাস্যোজ্জ্বল কামাল আমাদের, ব্যাচের সঙ্গীদের/ সহপাঠিদের আর অভ্যর্থনা জানাবেন না এবং তাঁকে বন্ধু হিসাবে পেয়ে আমাদেরকে ধন্য মনে করবেন না!
