Descriptive Paragraphs

To develop a paragraph through the description, we define, describe, or explain a less familiar or unfamiliar subject by relating it to some familiar subject. In a paragraph being developed by description, the topic sentence functions as the basic definition. The subsequent sentences function as developers detail, explain, and/or elaborate on the various aspects of the particular definition. A descriptive paragraph provides a vibrant experience for the reader through vivid language and descriptions of something. Unlike narrative paragraphs, which must include personal thoughts, feelings, and growth, descriptive paragraphs do not need to be personal in nature. Instead, descriptive paragraphs must focus on vividly and objectively describing something to the reader. In order to provide this vivid detail, the writer must use language that appeals to the reader’s five senses: sight, smell, sound, taste, and touch. To appeal to these senses, the writer must use descriptive language, usually in the form of adjectives, that describes the sensations felt by the senses.

এ ধরনের প্যারাগ্রাফে কোনো ব্যক্তি, স্থান বা বস্তু সম্পর্কে বর্ণনা দেওয়া থাকে। মূলত,  Five senses অর্থাৎ touch,smell,sight, sound and taste দ্বারা লব্ধ জ্ঞানকে  এই ধরনের প্যারাগ্রাফে সঞ্চারিত করতে হয়। যেমন -

Listing paragraphs

To develop a paragraph through the listing strategy, we have to describe or state several items, or states, or actions related to a given topic or subject. In other words, in such a paragraph, the aspects of a subject are dealt with one after one by using such transitional words as firstly, secondly, thirdly, finally or first, next, afterward, lastly, and so on.

The technique of listing helps us avoid something looking like a list of items, for instance, a shopping list, a menu, etc, and develop paragraphs in a smooth and effective manner. This technique applies to such topics as ‘My last Eid Shopping’, ‘Festivals in Bangladesh’, 'How to Make a Cup of Coffee', and so on.

একটা নির্দিষ্ট  list এর অন্তর্ভুক্ত তথ্যাদির উপর নির্ভর করে যে প্যারাগ্রাফ লেখা হয় সেটাকে listing paragraph বলে। যেমন -
