I have read the story 'The Luncheon' by William Somerset Maugham, in this short story, he relates about a lady who is an admirer of his stories. She wins the author's favor and expresses her wish to meet him at a high-class restaurant called Foyots to have a little luncheon. William was not a rich man and had never even thought of visiting that restaurant, nor did he possess the art of refusing her request.

Estimating the cost of a luncheon, which should not cost more than fifteen Francs, he decided to cut down coffee from his menu, so that he could have enough for himself for the next two weeks. His meeting was fixed on Thursday, at half-past twelve, through correspondence. The lady was in her Forties, talkative, and not attractive. She had ordered Salmon, and Caviar, white champagne while the Salmon was being prepared. William had ordered for the cheapest dish mutton- chops.

She kept enjoying the meal and chatting about art, literature, and music, while William kept wondering about the bill that was soaring above that which he had anticipated. Adding to worsen the situation, she ordered for ice-cream and then coffee after Asparagus at the same time announcing that 'she never ate anything for luncheon - just a bite’. That worried William's mind about how he was going to pay such a high bill.

To his utter dismay, the head waiter walked up to the table with a large basket full of huge peaches. She picked up one protesting that her meal was just a snack and that she could certainly enjoy the Peach.

The bill was finally paid, and William found himself with just a few Francs for the tips, and not a penny left in his pocket for the whole month. William believes that he had had his revenge for then when the Twenty years had passed by, he met her weighing One Hundred and Thirty -Six Kilograms.

                         Write what you liked and did not like about the story

I liked the modesty of the writer William Somerset Maugham. First of all, he did not refuse the request of the lady admirer for a luncheon in an expensive restaurant even though it was tough for him to comply. Finally, without showing any excuse he paid the bill in full by himself.

I did not like the lavish eating habit of the lady who was in fact voracious eater though gave false hope of less eating. She only ordered various expensive menus whereas the writer was eating less and cheaper food beside her.

If you are asked to bring some changes in the story, what would you change

If I am asked to bring some changes I would change the hypocrisy of the lady admirer who wasted an extravagant amount of money of a modest writer. If she truly were a loving fan or follower, she would not have put the writer in a difficult situation. On the other hand, a true fan always proposes an invitation rather than requesting one.

                                                 Concluding statement

In this story, the writer uses humour and irony to depict the character of the woman. The narrator takes the woman to an expensive restaurant. He is startled when he sees the high prices on the menu but relieved when his guest tells him that she takes very little food for luncheon. However, ironically, the woman eats some of the most expensive things available, like salmon and caviar, while the poor author only eats a mutton chop. In the end, the result of extravagant and voracious eating habit is mentioned in the story reflecting on the obesity of the lady after twenty years. It means the habit acquired in youth leaves very hardly in old age.
